Rho kinase inhibitors are a class of medicines that affect how cells change shape and move by blocking Rho-associated protein kinases, which are enzymes inside cells. In the eye, these drugs relax and loosen a tissue called the trabecular meshwork, allowing fluid to drain more easily and lowering pressure inside the eye. They are usually used as eye drops for people with glaucoma or high eye pressure and can be an option when other treatments are not enough. Beyond helping fluid drain, these medicines may improve blood flow to small vessels and reduce stiffness in tissues, which could help the optic nerve. They can also influence cellular processes that might support nerve health and repair, making them of interest for broader protective effects. Common side effects include redness and a sensation of irritation in the eye, but serious risks are relatively uncommon. Because they act on basic pathways inside cells, researchers are studying whether these drugs can help with healing and nerve regrowth, not just lower pressure. They are an important addition to glaucoma treatment options because they work differently than most older medications. As with any medication, people should use them under a doctorâs supervision and report side effects.
