Mitochondrial dysfunction happens when the tiny powerhouses inside your cells, called mitochondria, stop working properly and can’t produce energy as they should. Mitochondria turn food and oxygen into ATP, the molecule cells use for energy, so when they fail, cells may not have enough fuel to do their jobs. Because mitochondria affect so many cellular processes, their failure is linked to a wide range of conditions, from rare inherited mitochondrial diseases to common disorders like neurodegenerative and metabolic illnesses. Researchers study ways to support mitochondrial health through lifestyle changes (exercise, good sleep, balanced diet), medications, and targeted nutrients, although treatments vary widely depending on the underlying cause.
