pigment granules

Pigment granules are tiny particles of colored material, mostly melanin, that live inside certain cells of the eye such as the iris and retinal pigment epithelium. They normally help determine eye color and protect tissues by absorbing stray light, but when those particles become loose they can float in the eyeโ€™s internal fluid. Free pigment granules may drift into channels that drain fluid from the eye and can clog those outflow pathways, which sometimes leads to higher pressure inside the eye. When pressure rises and is left untreated, it can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss, so detecting excess pigment in the eye is important. Pigment can be released for several reasons, including mechanical rubbing inside the eye, trauma, or anatomical variations that increase contact between structures. Doctors look for pigment granules during eye exams with special lights and instruments and may measure eye pressure and examine drainage angles if pigment release is suspected. Management can range from observation and pressure-lowering eye drops to procedures that restore fluid flow or reduce further pigment release. Understanding pigment granules matters because they are a visible sign that something in the eyeโ€™s balance has changed and may require follow-up to protect long-term vision.
