Pigment dispersion syndrome happens when tiny bits of pigment break loose from the colored part of the eye (the iris) and float into the fluid inside the eye. These pigment granules can settle in different places, including the drainage channels that let fluid leave the eye. When the channels get clogged, fluid drainage slows and pressure inside the eye can rise. Many people with this condition do not notice symptoms at first, but some may experience blurry vision, halos around lights, or occasional eye discomfort. An eye doctor can find the condition during a routine exam by looking inside the eye and checking pressure and drainage. Tests might include special views of the front of the eye and measurements of eye pressure over time. Treatment focuses on protecting vision by lowering eye pressure if it rises; this can involve eye drops, laser procedures to improve drainage, or regular monitoring when pressure is normal. Left untreated, rising pressure can lead to damage to the optic nerve and permanent vision loss, so follow-up care is important. Early detection and careful monitoring give the best chance to prevent serious problems and preserve sight.
