Steroid eye pressure refers to an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eyeball that happens after using steroid medicines, usually eye drops, ointments, or pills. Steroids are drugs that reduce inflammation, but in some people they interfere with the eye's natural drainage system, causing fluid to build up and pressure to rise. This rise is measured as intraocular pressure (IOP) and is different from normal short-term changes because it can persist while the steroid is in use. Many people do not notice symptoms at first, but high pressure can cause headaches, blurred vision, halos around lights, or a feeling of pressure in the eye; sometimes there are no symptoms until damage occurs. If left untreated, prolonged high pressure can injure the optic nerve and lead to glaucoma, a condition that causes permanent vision loss. Certain forms of steroids and longer treatment increase the risk, and some people are more sensitive — especially those with a personal or family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high myopia, or previous eye surgery. Eye doctors diagnose it by measuring intraocular pressure and checking the optic nerve and visual field during follow-up visits. Treatment may include lowering or stopping the steroid, switching to a different medicine, or using pressure-lowering eye drops; in persistent cases, laser or surgery might be needed to protect vision. Because steroids are commonly prescribed for many inflammation-related eye conditions, awareness and regular eye checks while using them are important to catch pressure rises early. If you are prescribed steroid treatment for your eyes or body, talk with your doctor about the risks, and make sure to attend recommended eye exams so any increase in pressure can be treated quickly.
