laser iridotomy

Laser iridotomy is a simple outpatient procedure that uses a focused laser beam to make a tiny opening in the colored part of the eye. The purpose of that opening is to create an extra pathway for the eye’s internal fluid to move from the back of the eye to the front, reducing the chance of pressure buildup. It is often done when the natural passage for fluid is blocked or at risk of becoming blocked, and sometimes as a preventive measure to avoid sudden pressure spikes. The treatment is usually quick, takes only a few minutes per eye, and is done under local numbing drops so you remain awake and comfortable. After the procedure people may experience mild irritation, light sensitivity, or temporary blurred vision; serious complications are uncommon but can include inflammation or bleeding. Doctors will often use anti-inflammatory eye drops afterward and check eye pressure to make sure it falls to a safe level. While this procedure can significantly reduce the chance of an acute pressure attack, some people still need additional medications or surgery to control eye pressure long-term. It matters because it can prevent sudden vision-threatening emergencies and help protect the optic nerve from damage, and regular follow-up care is important to confirm the opening remains effective.
