Redox balance refers to the steady state between chemical reactions that remove electrons (oxidation) and those that add electrons (reduction) in cells and tissues. These reactions happen all the time as your body makes energy, builds molecules, and sends signals, so keeping them in a healthy balance is essential for normal function. If the balance shifts too far toward oxidation, reactive molecules can accumulate and damage DNA, proteins, and fats. If it shifts too far toward reduction, some signaling pathways and defense responses can be disrupted, which can also cause problems. The body uses antioxidants and specialized enzymes to manage this balance and neutralize excess reactive molecules. Everyday factors like diet, exercise, sleep, and exposure to pollution or cigarette smoke influence the balance. Maintaining a healthy redox balance matters because it affects aging, immune function, and the risk of chronic diseases. Understanding and supporting this balance helps people make choices that protect cells without interfering with the normal chemical processes the body needs to work properly.
