Ahmed-valve

The Ahmed valve is a small implant doctors place in the eye to lower pressure when glaucoma cannot be controlled with medicines or other operations. It has a short tube that drains excess fluid from inside the eye to a plate tucked under the outer eye tissue, creating a new pathway for fluid to leave. What sets it apart is a built-in valve mechanism that helps prevent the eye pressure from falling too low right after surgery. Surgeons often choose it for difficult cases, such as when prior treatments failed or quick pressure control is needed. The operation usually takes under an hour, and patients need careful follow-up while the eye heals and the device settles. Like all procedures, it carries risks such as infection, bleeding, tube exposure, or changes in vision, so monitoring is important. Over months and years scar tissue can form around the plate and reduce how well the device drains fluid, and some people need additional treatments later. For many patients, the Ahmed valve can meaningfully lower pressure and slow the nerve damage that leads to vision loss, making it an important option in glaucoma care.
