People who are legally blind often still have some usable sight; they may read large print or use remaining peripheral vision with the help of assistive devices. Being classified as legally blind can affect driving privileges, access to mobility training, and eligibility for adaptive technology and vocational services. An eye doctor measures vision and fields and documents results for official certification or benefit applications. The designation matters because it unlocks practical supports—such as financial aid, transportation assistance, and rehabilitation services—that help people maintain independence. If someone suspects they meet the criteria, getting a formal eye exam and documentation is the first step toward obtaining the help they need.
