periodontal health

Periodontal health refers to the condition of the gums and the structures that support your teeth, including the bone and the connective tissues. Healthy gums fit snugly around teeth, do not bleed when brushed, and help keep teeth stable. Problems begin when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up along the gum line and causes inflammation. Early inflammation is called gingivitis and can often be reversed with better cleaning, while untreated inflammation can progress to periodontitis, which damages bone and causes loose teeth. Common risk factors include smoking, poor oral hygiene, certain medications, and conditions like diabetes that make healing harder. Keeping gums healthy matters because it preserves the ability to chew, speak, and smile without pain or embarrassment. Beyond the mouth, chronic gum inflammation is linked to higher levels of inflammation in the body and may increase the risk of other conditions such as heart disease and complications of diabetes. Simple daily care like brushing twice, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are the most effective ways to prevent gum disease. When disease develops, treatments range from deep cleanings performed by a dentist to medications and, in advanced cases, surgery to restore supporting structures. Paying attention to gum health and seeing a dental professional regularly can prevent tooth loss and support overall wellbeing.
