glaucoma causes

Glaucoma causes refers to the biological and physical processes that lead to damage of the optic nerve and loss of vision. In many cases, it happens when fluid pressure inside the eye builds up because the eye’s drainage system does not work well. That increased pressure pushes on the optic nerve and slowly damages the nerve fibers that carry visual information to the brain. However, not all glaucoma is caused by high pressure; some people develop optic nerve damage even with normal eye pressure. Other causes include injury to the eye, inflammation, certain medications such as long-term steroid use, and other eye conditions that block fluid flow. Age and other health problems like diabetes or poor blood circulation can make the nerve more vulnerable. Understanding these causes matters because early treatment can slow or stop the damage and preserve sight. Treatments aim to lower eye pressure or protect the nerve through medicines, laser procedures, or surgery. Knowing the possible causes also helps doctors choose the right tests and monitoring schedule. Being aware of symptoms or risk signals can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.
