Fuchs heterochromic iridocyclitis is a long-lasting, usually mild inflammation that affects the front part of the eye, especially the iris and nearby structures. The name describes two common features: one eye may develop a different-colored iris than the other, and there is inflammation of the iris and the fluid-filled front part of the eye. People often have very few symptoms — no sharp pain or obvious redness — so it can go unnoticed for a long time. Doctors may find small white deposits on the inner surface of the cornea and subtle signs of chronic inflammation during an eye exam. Over time this condition commonly leads to cataract formation and can increase the risk of glaucoma, which can harm vision if not treated. The exact cause is not fully known, but researchers have found links with viral infections in some cases. Treatment focuses on monitoring and managing complications rather than trying to eliminate the inflammation entirely, because strong steroid drops often aren’t very helpful and can cause side effects. Cataract surgery is often successful when needed, though extra care is taken to control inflammation before and after the operation. If glaucoma develops, eye pressure needs to be controlled using medicines, laser procedures, or sometimes surgery. Regular eye checkups are important so problems can be spotted early and treated to protect vision.
