optic neuropathy

Optic neuropathy refers to damage to the optic nerve, the bundle of fibers that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. When this nerve is injured, it can cause blurred vision, loss of central vision, reduced color perception, or patches of missing vision, and sometimes pain with eye movement depending on the cause. Many different processes can lead to nerve damage, including lack of blood flow, inflammation, pressure from nearby structures, toxins, and nutritional problems. Because the optic nerve is essential for sight, any injury to it can seriously affect daily life and independence. Detecting problems early matters because some causes are reversible or treatable if addressed promptly, while delays can lead to permanent vision loss. Eye doctors use tests like visual acuity checks, visual field testing, imaging scans, and sometimes blood tests to find the cause and degree of nerve damage. Treatment depends on what is causing the injury: it may involve correcting nutritional deficiencies, stopping harmful substances, treating inflammation, or relieving pressure. If you notice sudden changes in vision, it’s important to seek medical attention quickly so appropriate tests and therapy can begin.
