astrocyte

An astrocyte is a type of supportive cell in the brain and spinal cord that looks a bit like a star, which is how it got its name. These cells do many jobs: they help keep the fluid around neurons balanced, supply nutrients, remove waste, and support the connections between nerve cells so signals travel smoothly. Astrocytes also help regulate blood flow in tiny brain vessels and participate in forming the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from harmful substances. When the nervous system is injured or under stress, astrocytes change their shape and behavior in a process called reactive gliosis; this can help repair tissue but can also create scarring that affects recovery. Because they interact closely with neurons and blood vessels, astrocytes play a big role in both normal brain function and in disease. Changes in their activity have been linked to conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and age-related neurodegeneration. Researchers study astrocytes to understand how they could be helped to support healing or to prevent them from contributing to harm. In short, these cells are not just passive helpers; they are active players in keeping the nervous system healthy and responding when things go wrong.
