erythropoiesis

Erythropoiesis is the process by which the body makes red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen from the lungs to every part of the body, so making enough of them is essential. New red blood cells are produced mainly in the bone marrow under the control of a hormone called erythropoietin. When tissues need more oxygen, the kidneys release more of this hormone to tell the marrow to speed up production. Problems with this process can cause anemia, fatigue, shortness of breath, or, less commonly, too many red cells which raises the risk of blood clots. Doctors measure related things like hemoglobin, hematocrit, and reticulocyte count to see how well production is working. Erythropoiesis also changes with life events like pregnancy, high altitude, chronic disease, or certain medications. Some treatments aim to boost or suppress it, so understanding the process helps guide therapies for many conditions. It's also important in sports and medicine where blood manipulation can affect performance and health. In short, erythropoiesis keeps tissues supplied with oxygen and is central to diagnosing and treating many common medical problems.
