Zeaxanthin is a yellow-orange plant pigment in the carotenoid family that you get from foods such as corn, orange peppers, spinach, and egg yolks. Like lutein, it concentrates in the back of the eye, especially in the part responsible for the most detailed central vision, and works as a natural filter and antioxidant. Zeaxanthin absorbs harmful short-wavelength blue light, which helps reduce glare and visual discomfort when you are in bright conditions. It also helps protect delicate eye cells from oxidative damage caused by everyday light exposure and metabolic processes. The distribution of zeaxanthin in the central retina complements other similar pigments, contributing specifically to central visual performance and contrast. Since the body does not produce zeaxanthin, maintaining dietary intake or using supplements can raise levels in the eye over time. Zeaxanthin is fat-soluble, so consuming it with some dietary fat improves absorption.
