Eye scans are noninvasive imaging tests that create detailed pictures of the inside of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. Common types include optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, and angiography, with each method showing different layers or aspects of eye structure and circulation. These scans are painless and often take only a few minutes, but they provide much more information than a basic eye exam alone. They can reveal early signs of disease, such as thinning of nerve fibers, fluid buildup, or abnormal blood vessels, often before a person notices symptoms. Because the images are objective and can be compared over time, they are excellent for tracking progression and the effect of treatments. Eye scans are widely used to monitor conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. They are also helpful for screening people at higher risk, because early detection often improves treatment success. Technological advances have made these scans faster and more detailed, and some devices can even map blood flow or measure tiny changes in tissue thickness. Results are usually explained by an eye doctor, who will combine scan findings with other tests to make a diagnosis or follow-up plan. For patients, scans mean clearer answers and less guesswork about whether the eye is changing or stable, which helps guide care and protect vision.
