Open-Angle

Open-angle describes a condition of the eye in which the drainage angle between the iris and cornea appears open, but the microscopic drainage system does not work well enough to keep eye pressure at a safe level. Because fluid drains slowly, pressure inside the eye can rise over time and gradually damage the optic nerve. This form tends to develop slowly and painlessly, so many people do not notice symptoms until vision loss has begun, often starting with the side or peripheral vision. Routine eye exams that include measuring eye pressure and examining the optic nerve are the best way to detect this problem early. Treatments aim to lower eye pressure to slow or prevent further nerve damage and can include daily prescription eye drops, laser treatments, or surgery in more advanced cases. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are important because any vision lost from nerve damage typically cannot be restored. Risk factors include older age, a family history, high eye pressure, certain medical conditions, and long-term use of some medications. Managing overall health, taking prescribed eye medications as directed, and attending regular follow-up visits help control the condition and protect vision. With proper care, many people with this condition can maintain useful sight for years, but lifelong monitoring is usually necessary.
