Normal-Tension

Normal-Tension refers to a form of optic nerve disease where damage happens even though the pressure inside the eye measures within the normal range. In this condition, the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain slowly becomes damaged, which can lead to gradual loss of peripheral vision and, if untreated, more serious vision loss. Because eye pressure is not elevated, the condition can be harder to recognize without regular eye exams that check the optic nerve and test the visual field. Researchers think other factors besides pressure—such as reduced blood flow to the optic nerve, structural susceptibility of the nerve, or low blood pressure—may play major roles. People may not notice early changes because vision loss often starts at the edges of the visual field and progresses slowly. Management focuses on protecting the nerve and slowing progression, which can include lowering eye pressure further with drops, laser, or surgery, as well as addressing other contributing factors like blood pressure and circulation. Regular monitoring by an eye specialist is important to detect progression and adjust treatment. This condition matters because it can be missed if only eye pressure is checked, and timely treatment can help preserve vision for years. Understanding that normal pressure does not always mean no risk helps people and clinicians look at the whole picture—eye structure, blood flow, symptoms, and test results—to keep vision safe.
