T cells

T cells are a type of white blood cell that play a central role in the body’s adaptive immune system, which learns to recognize and remember specific invaders. They develop in the thymus and carry receptors that let them detect small pieces of proteins, called antigens, presented on the surface of other cells. Different kinds perform different jobs: helper T cells coordinate and boost immune responses, cytotoxic T cells kill infected or abnormal cells, regulatory T cells calm the immune response to prevent damage to healthy tissue, and memory T cells provide long-term protection. When a T cell recognizes a matching antigen, it can multiply and launch a focused attack, or help other immune cells do their work. This ability to target specific threats makes T cells essential for clearing viral infections and for keeping cancerous cells in check. However, if T cells wrongly target the body’s own tissues, they can cause autoimmune diseases, and if they are too weak or absent, people are vulnerable to infections. T cells are also the basis for powerful modern therapies: vaccines rely on them for lasting protection, and engineered T cell treatments are used to fight some cancers. Because of their central role in immunity, T cells are a major focus in research on infections, autoimmunity, vaccines, and cancer therapies. Understanding how they are activated and regulated helps doctors design better treatments and manage immune-related side effects.
