IOP-lowering therapy

IOP-lowering therapy refers to treatments that reduce the pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure. High pressure can damage the optic nerve over time and lead to vision loss, so lowering that pressure is a main way to prevent progression of certain eye conditions. Treatments include medicated eye drops, oral medications, laser procedures, and surgeries; the choice depends on how high the pressure is, how fast the condition is progressing, and a person’s overall health. Eye drops are often the first step and work by either decreasing fluid production in the eye or improving fluid drainage. Laser and surgical options are used when medications are not enough or when people cannot use drops reliably. Regular monitoring by an eye care professional is important to see how well a therapy is working and to adjust treatment as needed. Side effects, cost, and how easy a treatment is to use all influence which option is best for someone. Sticking to the prescribed plan and attending follow-up visits helps protect vision and reduce the risk of permanent damage.
