Photodisruption is a way of using very focused light to make a tiny, controlled break in tissue without cutting with a blade. When a laser pulse is concentrated into a tiny spot, the light can briefly ionize the material there and create a tiny bubble or plasma that rapidly expands and collapses, physically separating tissue at that point. Because the effect is confined to the focal spot, it allows extremely precise disruption with minimal damage to nearby structures. This technique is used in delicate procedures where accuracy matters, such as certain eye surgeries and microscale surgical work. It differs from heating or chemically altering tissue because the main effect is a mechanical disruption driven by rapid changes in pressure and bubble formation. The advantages are high precision and the ability to work inside tissues without large incisions, but it also requires careful control of energy and timing to avoid unwanted shock waves or minor bleeding. Equipment must be accurately aimed and timed, and operators need to understand the limits of how much damage the tissue can tolerate.
