The ACS part stands for alternating current stimulation, meaning the current changes direction many times per second instead of flowing steadily one way. In practice, a clinician places electrodes on the skin near the eyelids or on the bony orbit and delivers brief, low-intensity pulses while the person is awake. The intent is to gently change how retinal and optic nerve cells fire and to encourage the brain’s visual pathways to become more active or adaptable. Because it works from outside the eye and uses very low currents, it avoids surgery and is generally considered low risk, though it can cause mild tingling, brief discomfort, or skin redness. Clinicians and researchers are testing it for diseases where retinal cells or the optic nerve are damaged, because electrical stimulation might slow decline or improve some aspects of vision. It matters because it offers a potential noninvasive way to support or stimulate damaged nerve tissue, which could complement medicines or other treatments. Some studies have reported short-term improvements in visual function or measures of nerve activity, indicating the approach can alter how the visual system works.
