Baseline IOP

Baseline IOP stands for the initial measurement of the fluid pressure inside the eye before any treatment or major change in care. It is measured with a simple procedure called tonometry and gives a starting point doctors use to judge how the eye is doing. Normal eye pressure varies from person to person, and one single reading is less useful than a pattern of readings over time. Knowing the baseline pressure helps clinicians decide if a person is at higher risk for conditions like glaucoma and whether to start or change treatment. It also serves as a reference to see how well medicines or procedures are working, because successful treatment should lower pressure compared with this baseline. Because pressure can change with time of day, posture, and other factors, consistent testing conditions make baseline numbers more reliable. Keeping track of baseline and follow-up measurements can prevent vision loss by guiding timely treatment adjustments. In short, baseline IOP is a simple but critical number that helps protect long-term eye health.
