Pseudoexfoliation is an eye condition where flaky, dandruff-like material builds up on the front structures of the eye, especially the lens and the pupil area. This material comes from abnormal proteins produced by cells in the eye, and it can be seen during an eye exam with a special microscope. It matters because those flakes can clog the eye’s drainage system, raising pressure inside the eye and increasing the risk of a common sight-threatening disease. People with this condition are more likely to develop pressure-related damage to the optic nerve and to need more aggressive treatment than people without it. It is most often seen in older adults and can appear in one or both eyes, sometimes affecting each eye differently. The presence of this material also makes some eye surgeries, like cataract removal, more complicated because the lens can be less stable. Doctors diagnose it by looking for the characteristic deposits and by measuring eye pressure and nerve health over time. Treatment focuses on controlling pressure with eye drops, laser procedures, or surgery if needed; there is no medicine that removes the deposits themselves. Regular checkups matter so doctors can catch pressure rises early and protect eyesight.
