OCT-Angiography

Optical coherence tomography angiography is a noninvasive imaging method that maps blood vessels inside the eye using light waves. Instead of injecting dye, it detects the movement of red blood cells between repeated scans to create detailed pictures of the retinal and choroidal circulation. The resulting images show the structure and pattern of tiny vessels and capillary networks that feed the retina. Doctors use these images to find areas with poor blood supply, abnormal new vessel growth, or vessel blockage. Because it is quick and dye-free, it is safer and easier to repeat than older angiography techniques. It helps diagnose conditions like diabetic eye disease, age-related degeneration, and some forms of glaucoma. Clinicians also use it to monitor disease progression and to see whether treatments are restoring normal blood flow. The technique does have limits: it can produce image artifacts, has a limited field of view, and does not directly measure blood flow speed. Interpreting the images takes training and relies on good scan quality and correct image segmentation. Overall, this method has become an important tool for detecting and managing diseases that affect the eye's circulation.
