A nutritional deficiency happens when the body doesn't get enough of a vitamin, mineral, or other nutrient it needs to work properly. Treatment usually involves correcting the diet, taking supplements for a time, and addressing any underlying medical cause so the body can absorb nutrients again. Left untreated, a deficiency can cause lasting damage such as developmental delays in children, anemia, weakened bones, nerve damage, or problems with the immune system. Prevention focuses on eating a varied, balanced diet, using fortified foods when needed, getting regular medical checkups, and taking targeted supplements for people at higher risk. Understanding and treating deficiencies matters because getting the right nutrients helps people feel better day to day and prevents serious long-term health problems.
