glaucoma subtypes

Glaucoma subtypes are the different forms of a disease that harms the optic nerve, the part of your eye that sends visual signals to your brain. The main forms include open-angle, which is the most common and progresses slowly; angle-closure, which can come on suddenly and be an emergency; normal-tension, where nerve damage happens even though pressure seems normal; congenital, which affects babies and young children; and secondary types caused by other eye problems, medications, or injury. Each form has a different underlying reason, such as how well fluid drains from the eye or whether another condition is causing pressure to rise. Because the cause and behavior differ, the way doctors test for and treat each form also changes. For example, some types are managed with eye drops to lower pressure, others respond to laser treatment, and some require surgery or treatment of the underlying condition. Symptoms can also vary: many forms cause slow, painless loss of side vision, while angle-closure can bring sudden pain, redness, and blurry sight. Knowing which form a person has matters because it affects how quickly treatment must start and what kind of treatment will work best. Regular eye exams are important because early detection of the right form can protect vision and slow or stop further damage.
